JAMES MYLROIE

LONAN

In the name of God amen, I James Mylroie of Colby in the parish of Lonan calling unto mind the uncertainty of this transitory life and the certainty of death being of sound disposing mind and memory do make this my last will and testament.

In the first place I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it and my body I recommend to the earth by a decent Christian burial according to the discretion of my executor.

And as to my worldly goods, I dispose of in the manner following:

I leave and bequeath to my beloved son John Mylroie the sum of two shillings and sixpence.

I leave and bequeath to my beloved son Thomas Mylroie the sum of two shillings and sixpence.

I leave and bequeath to my beloved daughter Ellen, wife of Robert Kelly, the sum of one pound.

I leave and bequeath to my beloved daughter Anne, wife of Richard Smith, the sum of four pounds.

I leave and bequeath to the poor of this parish the sum of two shillings and sixpence.

I leave and bequeath the sum of one shilling to any person or persons who may lawfully have a claim in this my last will and testament.

Lastly I nominate, appoint and ordain my beloved wife Ann Mylroie als Kewley to be whole and sole executrix of this my last will and testament and I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannull all and every other former testaments, wills, legacies, bequests and executors, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I set my name this the nineteenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand, eight hundred and sixty-four. James Mylroie his mark X

Witnessed by John Skillicorn, John Clague

At a Chapter Court held at Douglas on the 23rd day of October 1874 Diocese of Sodor and Man} John Skillicorn and John Clague the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of James Mylroie of Ballacosney in the parish of Lonan [deceased?] the testator made oath on the Holy Evangelist that the testator died on the 24th day of July 1874 and when of sound mind, memory and understanding ………………………………… he duly executed and acknowledged the same to be his last will and testament by putting his cross mark thereto in their presence and that they in his presence at his request each in presence of eachother subscribe their names as witnesses thereto in attestation thereof Anne Mylroie widow the relice of said testator and the executrix named in the said will is therefore sworn well and truly to fulfill and execute the same and to administer all and singular the personal estate and effects of the testator according to law, by paying the just debts and testamentary expenses of the deceased and the legacies contained in his will so far forth as the said estate and effects will extend and the law bind her and to return to the Episcopal Registry of the Isle and Diocese of Sodor and Man a full, true and perfect inventory of the said estate and effects with an accurate account of her acts and proceedings in the premises when thereunto lawfully required and to these ends she hath given pledges namely John Clague of Ballavarane and Robert Kelly of Laxey Glen both in the parish of Lonan who have entered into and executed the usual Bond in the presence of the Court.

  1. COLBY - Ballacosney
  2. James jnr was the older son of James Mylroie snr & Elinor Skillicorn, and baptised in 1788
  3. He married Ann Kewley in 1824. They had five children: Elinor (1824), John (1826), Thomas (1829), James (1833), & Ann (1843)
    • Elinor married Robert Kelly
    • John married Elleanor Fargher 1852
    • Thomas married Ann Kelly 1854
    • James died aged 21
    • Ann married Richard Smith 1863
  4. James snr had settled the family's Ballacosney estate onto James jnr in 1828 and then in 1853, James jnr settled the estate onto his oldest son, John
  5. This oldest son John and wife Ellenor Fargher had 7 children: John James 1853, William Henry 1854, Thomas Arthur 1855, Frederick 1858, Edward George 1861-1861, Richard Fargher 1864-1884 & Elleanor Ann 1865
  6. Just two years after James jn died in 1876, James's oldest son John died leaving his son 22 year old son, John James, as heir at law to a heavily encumbered estate, the result of several mortgages that John was simply unable to repay
  7. John Isaac Mylroie, the only son of John James, eventually sold the last of the estate in 1908 and Ballacosney was gone from the Mylroie family forever
